Background of Upazila Administration

Naming of Noakhali: The name Noakhali originated in the late 180's. At that time Aurangzeb was the emperor of Delhi. The northern and eastern parts of Bhuluar were frequently inundated by the floods of the Dakatiya River, which originated in the hills of the hill Tripura. In order to protect the agricultural area from floods, a new canal was dug from Dakatia through Ramganj, Sonaimuri and Chaumuhani under the supervision of the Faujdar of Comilla to drain the flood water at the confluence of Meghna and Feni rivers. After digging this long canal, the new name of Bhuluya land is Noakhali, meaning the land of new canals. The canal, cut in the Mughal period from the local folk name 'Noah' of the word 'new', has popularly called this region Noakhali. Although Noakhali was made a separate district in 1821, it was known as Bhulua. On 29 March 1822, Governor Hastings II granted Noakhali the status of a separate district. But the newly declared district was renamed Bhulua to preserve the heritage of Bhulua state. From the age of 18 this region was directly named Noakhali. Noakhali district was dissolved in 1984 and two separate districts named Laxmipur and Feni were formed.

Sudharam (Sadar) Thana: Sadar Thana is known as the second largest thana in Noakhali district in terms of size and population. In 181 it became known as a thana. This police station was earlier known as 'Sudharam' police station. It is learned that the name of this police station is Sudharam Thana after a rich businessman and philanthropist named Sudharam Majumdar. In December 1983, it was renamed as Noakhali Sadar Thana.
